We now have 8 students on board the Lettuce Talk Exchange!
We are truly excited to have our onbard
Young Filmmakers
Salinas: Evan Harley Andrea Jennifer
Monterey: Rose Alex Anthony Glenn
and become the pioneers of Lettuce Talk Steinbeck
project (see photos at initial meeting).
We are fortunate to have Trish Sullivan, Executive Director of Artistas Unidos - Artists United, Don Livermore, Principal of Marina High School along with Michael Houston from Picture America & Board President of the Arts Council for Monterey County collaborating with the students in this creative community endeavor.
We appreciate the artistic collaboration of Director / Cinematographer JOHN LONGENECKER -- an Academy Award winner as producer of a live action short film. Thanks to John and Michael Houston of Pictures America .org we have HD video camera gear available for use by our young filmmakers for this project.
Last February 23rd, the initial group met and got acquainted with everyone involved in the project and got introduced to the use of the video cameras. A second meeting happened on March 8th where young filmmakers actually started to record some on-camera comments about the project! I am pretty sure Harley and Rose had a great time working with the cameras. We've got some photos on the website above along with some video and audio clips.
Up next will be the video shoots on the Steinbeck walking tours both in Monterey and Salinas.
Already, we have communicated something we always wanted to say about our community through Harley's words:
(Salinas) is not an unsafe place. The kids do get caught up in things at times (as in other places). The violence is not as bad as the news explains it and tries to show it Salinas High School is really a very good school This declaration is an excellent place to start a conversation towards doing their little but important bit in contributing to bringing down this invincible lettuce curtain between Salinas valley and Monterey Peninsula for this next generation of community leaders.

The John Steinbeck Map of America features popular images
from Steinbeck's novels such as Tortilla Flat (1935), The Grapes of Wrath
(1939), and The Pearl (1947). The outline of the map shows the route of
Travels with Charley (1962), and the central portion consists of detailed
street maps of the California towns of Salinas and Monterey, where Steinbeck
lived and set some of his works. Numbers on the maps are keyed to lists
of events in Steinbeck's novels. A portrait of the author appears in the
upper right corner. Research and design of the map were done by Molly Maguire,
who produced a series of literary maps in the 1980s.
